Sodium bicarbonate is the monosodium salt of carbonic acid with alkalizing and electrolyte replacement properties. Upon dissociation, sodium bicarbonate forms sodium and bicarbonate ions. Ion formation increases plasma bicarbonate and buffers excessive hydrogen ion concentration, causing blood pH to rise.
» It is used as a food additive with the code E500.
» Sodium bicarbonate appears as white crystalline powder or lumps.
