Sodium acetate is the anhydrous, sodium salt form of acetic acid. Sodium acetate decomposes in anhydrous water and forms sodium ions (Na+) and acetate ions. Sodium is the major cation of the extracellular fluid and plays a major role in fluid and electrolyte replacement therapies.
