It is a substance known as the spirit of salt among the people, consisting of hydrochloric acid, hydrogen and chlorine elements. Hydrochloric acid solution is a colorless aqueous liquid with a sharp, irritating odor. It consists of hydrogen chloride, a gas dissolved in water. It sinks and mixes with water. Produces irritating steam.
