Calcium hypochlorite appears as a white granular solid (or compressed tablets from granules) with a chlorine odor. Toxic, skin irritant. It does not burn, but accelerates the combustion of combustible materials. Prolonged exposure to fire or heat can cause severe deterioration of the material and rupture of the container. It is used for water treatment, disinfectant for swimming pools, bleaching paper and textiles.
