Calcium carbonate is the carbonic salt of calcium (CaCO3). Calcium carbonate is used therapeutically as a phosphate buffer in hemodialysis, as an antacid in gastric hyperacid for the temporary relief of indigestion and heartburn, and as a calcium supplement for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

»   Calcium carbonate is a direct food additive. It is used as dough strengthener to replace starch and gluten, to precipitate the remaining pectin as a firming agent, to strengthen the supporting tissue and prevent it from collapsing during processing,
»   It is used as a nutritional supplement, as a pH control agent, to modify and maintain active acidity or alkalinity, and as a stabilizer and thickener to produce viscous solutions or dispersions, thicken, improve consistency or stabilize emulsions.
