Bentonite is a soft, porous and easily shaped open rock, predominantly in colloidal silica structure, consisting of clay minerals (mainly montmorillonite) with very small crystals formed by chemical weathering or degradation of volcanic ash, tuff and lava rich in aluminum and magnesium.
» Widely used in oil well drilling fluids, cement slurries for oil well casings, binder in foundry sands, and pelleting of iron ores.
» Used as sealant for channel walls, thickener in lubricating greases and refractory compositions, make-up materials, decolorizing agent, filler in ceramics, refractories, paper coatings, asphalt modifiers, varnishes and abrasives.
» Bentonite is a slightly grayish powdery solid.
